Enterprise Development Team Helps Entrepreneurs Plan Ahead

When an entrepreneur or business owner needs a business plan, the Enterprise Development Team at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has options that can help. As part of the Farm, Food and Enterprise Development Program, the Enterprise Development Team can help with feasibility studies for startups, or more commonly, help an established business improve and find new ways to advance.

Small Farms Team Still Committed to Farmer Clients

Although the title has changed, the farmer still comes first for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s Farm, Food and Enterprise Development Program. The new title is the result of a merger of the Value Added Agriculture and Local Foods teams, but their mission and goals haven’t changed. This is also true for the programs they offer, such as the Small Farms Team, which works to improve profitability and efficiency of growers across the state.

Field Day Will Explore Produce Production

Beany Bode and Joanne Roepke Bode, of Bode’s Moonlight Gardens, will share their experience raising pumpkins and produce at a Practical Farmers of Iowa field day they are hosting on Friday, June 21, from 1-3 p.m., on their farm near Algona.

The event – “Pumpkins and Produce in One Multipurpose Space” – is free to attend and will include light refreshments following the program. The field day is sponsored by Healthy Harvest of North Iowa, Iowa Farmers Union and Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association.

New Checklists Help Agritourism Operators Measure Risk

Farmers and landowners who open their property to the public face some unique risks and responsibilities.

To help ensure their operation is following best practices, a group of agritourism experts with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has put together six checklists that cover the many types of liability an owner may face.

The checklists cover bio-securityemergency preparednessfood safetypesticide safetyplay area safety and negligence mitigation.

Honey Producers Plan Field Day at Horticulture Research Station

The Iowa Honey Producers Association will hold its summer field day at the Iowa State University Horticulture Research Station June 15. Beekeepers will get a full day of instruction and hands-on learning from Iowa State experts, and apiary experts from across the state.
